EGYPT UPDATE: PRESIDENT MORSI DEPOSED BY MILITARY AND CONSTITUTION SUSPENDED

Its official, president Mohamed Morsi
has been deposed by the armed forces
- making good on their 48-hour
ultimatum issued on Monday.

Announcing a new road map for
Egypt's political future on national
television, army chief Gen Al Sisi
declared the constitution suspended
and named the head of the
constitutional court as interim
president who will put together a
transitional government for the highly
polarized country.

Al Sisi said the action of the military
was preemptive after consultations
with all political stakeholders since
November 2012 and following Morsi's
failure to meet the demands of the
final ultimatum.

The announcement was greeted by
thousands of jubilant anti Morsi
protesters. It is yet to be seen how
Morsi's supporters of the Muslim
Brotherhood party will react in the
coming hours and days.

About 26
persons are believed to have been
killed during the protests which were
largely peaceful. At least 16 of the dead
are alleged to be members of the pro
Morsi group.
