The brutal killing of Delsu student, Ify Gabriel Nwainokpor & friend

On Sunday 21st July 2013, Ify Gabriel Nwainokpor and his friend Kasim were attacked and beaten todeath by a mob at the Ajara area ofBadagry on the ground that their faces looked strange in the neighborhood, this is according to the people who posted the video oftheir lynching on Youtube. They claim that the Nigerian Police (Badagry division) watched as these men were hacked to death before their prime. They are cryingout to the world for justice and brought the barbaric incident to the attention of the media. Anotherlynching? This is unbelievable.I would not advise it but if you havethe heart to watch, then find the mob videoHERE...and find a comprehensive report of the sad incident from Punch after the cut...Punchng.comreports:Policemen attached to the Badagry Police Division, Lagos State, and some hoodlums have been accused of killing a 25-year-old undergraduate of Delta State University, Ifechukwude Nwainokpor, and his friend, identified simply as Kazeem. An eight-minute video clip of the gruesome killing, which was made available toPUNCH Metro, showedthe two victims handcuffed together. They were covered in their own blood and beaten to death with sticks. Tyres were also put round their necks. An irate mob could be seen in the video, shouting, “die, die, burn them, burn them.”At some points in the video, a policeman was seen interviewing the boys. He asked who sent them (victims) to rob the area, an accusation they denied. One of the hoodlums, holding a sharp object attempted to cut off the private part of one of the victims.Nwainokpor could be seen pleading with the hoodlums and policemen to spare his life, saying he could identify himself if given a chance. His plea, however, fell on deaf ears. Our correspondent, who visited the family of Nwainokpor  on Tuesday, learnt that the lynching took place around 3pm on July 21, 2013 in Ajara area of Badagry, a community not far from Nwainokpor’s family home. His father, Samuel, toldPUNCH Metrothat his son was arrested while passing through a street in the area  but a misunderstanding later ensued and the hoodlums pounced on  him  and Kazeem. He added that  Nwainokpor, who was nicknamed Ify, was a final yearstudent of Geology and Mining. He said, “On that particular day, I was in Ghana when I received a telephone call  that I should come immediately. My wife was in Delta State taking care of her mother.“When I arrived two days later, my relatives and the caretaker of my house told me that my son was killed in the Ajara area along with his friend. I was devastated.“I got my son a temporary job with a Customs licensed agent since their lecturers were on strike.  He worked everyday except on Sundays when he visited his friends. On that day, he went to seeKazeem and they were strolling around Ajara.”Samuel said because there had been a robbery in Ajara four days earlier, some of the residents wereon the lookout for strange faces. He added that when the youth  sawtwo unknown young men, they  accosted them and an argument ensued. He said the youth called the head of the vigilante group in the area, one Asiribo. He said, “Asiribo came to the scenewith a locally-made pistol and handcuffs. He handcuffed my son and his friend before asking them questions.“Later, it was decided that the boys be taken to the Baale, Agano Oniyon of Agamade Ajara. But as they were going, Asiribo, while trying to return his gun into its pouch, mistakenly shot himself in the stomach and died.”Samuel said Asiribo’s death infuriated the youth, who  blamed the boys for  his  death.“The mob picked up sticks and beatthem to death. Policemen were there,” he  said.Holding back tears, the retired immigration officer added  that thepolice treated the matter as a robbery case. Beating  his chest,  Samuel said there was no way his son would have been involved in  armed robbery. He said, “I have been living in Badagry since 1982. I have only two children and Ifechukwude  is the  first. Ironically, he was born in that same area where he was killed.“I have lived in this area without any trouble and  the residents  can tell you that my sons are good  boys.”Nwainokpor’s boss, Aloysius Onyenibedi, described him as an honest and hardworking person.“I trusted him to the extent that I used to keep a lot of money with him. He was good to my children and was honest,” he said. The Nwainokpor family berated theDivisional Police Officer, Badagry Police Station,  Dankoli Mohammed, for the manner he treated the case.Samuel said when he approached the DPO, he was told that his son was killed at midnight for armed robbery. He said, “When the policemen came to take the corpses, guns were planted on them. Policemen at the station told the DPO that they were robbers. Their corpses were taken along with that Asiribo to Badagry General Hospital’s mortuary.“The following morning, the DPO released Asiribo’s corpse for burialwithout investigation. My relatives went to the station and after showing the DPO the video, the matter was transferred to the Area K Command.“At Present, Asiribo’s son has fled, while the DPO has been unable to identify the policemen who were present at the scene when my son  and his friend were killed.”PUNCH Metrohowever learnt that through the video, some people had arrested one of the perpetrators. The suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,Panti, Yaba. The spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said, “The incident is quite pathetic.Even if they were armed robbers, no one has the right to take the life of another. Why then do we have the police and the judiciary? The Nigerian police as well as the law condemn mob action and jungle justice. The commissioner of policehas set up a high- powered investigation body to investigate the matter.”

Funke Akindele was unlucky -Actors guild

The Actors Guild of Nigeria has expressed concern over the controversy surrounding the break in the marriage between popular Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, and her husband, Mr. Almaroof Oloyede, describing the development as "unfortunate."

The Chairman of AGN, FCT, Abuja chapter, Mr. Onwurah Agility, in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH said some marriages were not meant to be.

He said, "Because I am an actor does not mean I have to die in my marriage if it is not working out. We are humans like others, blood runs in our veins like other people.

"Marriage in Nollywood is not different from other marriages. But because we are the mirror of the society, the face of the screen and role models to many, if there is a problem in our marriage, it makes noise more than any other. There are many people in the industry that have been married for many years without separating.

"What happened to Funke (Akindele) is unfortunate but like she said, may be they were not to be husband and wife and she has learnt her lessons. It could have been anybody.

"The theory and stories that actors' marriages don't last are very wrong. I have been married for five years and still counting, likewise so many other actors in the industry."

Akindele, had while confirming the crash of her marriage, said she had learnt from her mistakes and had no grudge against her former husband.

ASUU strike: Suswam chairs Needs Committee

The Federal Government on Friday inaugurated the University Needs Implementation Committee headed by Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State.

The committee is to put in place appropriate requirements for learning in all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, said during the inauguration of the committee in Abuja that the major needs of all federal universities were identified by an assessment committee earlier set up to "assess and prioritise the needs of universities."

According to him, the report submitted by the Needs Assessment Committee mandates the inaugurated committee "to interface with all agencies providing funding support to the universities with the aim of appropriately channelling support to identified priorities,"

The Federal Government had set up the NAC to revitalise the physical infrastructure in the universities, with the aim of enhancing the Internally Generated Revenue base of the universities.

But the non-implementation of the report has pitted the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union and other trade unions in the nation's universities against the government.

Anyim said the committee's terms of reference included, "Simulating private sector investment into the public universities, monitoring progress of the projects implementation and produce quarterly reports for submission to the Federal Government and, intervention in any other matter that may be necessary to achieve the purpose of the Needs assessment."

See Funke Akindele's Personal Explanation On Her Break Up

Culled from TON
This is an excerpt from a chat Stella had
with Funke Akindele over her failed
marriage.

Stella: Funke how do you feel now that
your marriage has ended after just a
year? You must be going through a hard
time right now.... People are laughing at
you.
Funke: Thank you for calling, Stella.

First
of all let me clarify that: I have not replied
any sms or spoken to anyone on this
development before now and neither
have I threatened to sue anyone, I do not
know who sent out that sms denying that
my marriage is over.

That was what necessitated me sending
out a press release so as not to confuse
the public, especially my fans whom I'm
so passionate about. I've been unable to
pick calls due to my busy schedule on set
and I needed to settle down before
picking any calls, so you called at the
right time. I will address this issue now
and thereafter face my career and try to
concentrate on the things I have on my
plate at the moment...

Yes my marriage
has crashed . Let the people who are
laughing at me continue laughing, my job
afterall is to make people laugh.

Let those
who are without sins or mistake cast the
first stone . Let them continue judging me.
God is the overall judge, he is the one I
look up to.

Stella: I am shocked Funke. Why the
silence all these while why? Why
facebook?
Funke: Its my private life, I know I am a
public figure but I am entitled to some
privacy at least. What has happened has
happened; no one is beyond mistakes. I
will take corrections from this and apply
where necessary from now on... I bear Mr
Kehinde Oloyede no ill feelings.

For the records, she has also changed her
maiden name on twitter

Rivers state fracas: Presidency wants Governor Amaechi probed

Culled from Punch

The Presidency has advised security agencies to ensure that Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi was investigated and prosecuted after his tenure in office for his alleged involvement in Tuesday’s mayhem in the state House of Assembly.

The advice was given just as the Action Congress of Nigeria urged the Police Service Commission to address the causes of the fracas in the House rather than the symptoms in its investigation of the role of the police in the crisis.

The comments by the Presidency and the ACN followed a July 9 petition by Amaechi to Jonathan on the free for all that led to infliction of injuries on some lawmakers following an attempt to impeach the Speaker of the House, Mr. Daniel Amachree by a group led by Mr. Evans Bipi. Amaechi had in the petition which was also addressed to the PSC Chairman, Mike Okiro, requested the immediate transfer of the Commissioner in charge of the state Police Command, Joseph Mbu.

He also sent copies of the petition in which he detailed Mbu’s alleged atrocities to Senate President David Mark and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal. But the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, wondered why the governor’s priority should be on the redeployment of the police commissioner at a time when efforts were ongoing to fly an injured lawmaker, Michael Chinda, abroad for treatment. Gulak, in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Saturday, however gave an assurance that the President would look at the merits and demerits of Amaechi’s petition before taking a decision. Insisting that the governor should be held responsible for the fracas, the Presidential aide reminded Amaechi that the immunity from prosecution which he currently enjoys as a governor would end on expiration of his tenure. He therefore asked security agencies to investigate the fracas thoroughly and keep the file. Gulak said, , “It is true that as a sitting governor, he enjoys immunity but immunity cannot be forever. “Security agencies should investigate the matter (fracas) thoroughly and keep the file because I still find it amazing and tragic for the governor to go into the House of Assembly to play active role in the fracas. It amazes me. “But one thing is sure, the President will read through his (Amaechi’s) petition. He will study it and look at its merits and demerits. It is after that that the President will direct relevant authorities appropriately on the matter. “The governor had a game plan from the beginning. He wants the commissioner of police redeployed. He is not talking about a member of the House of Assembly who is the Majority Leader and his (Amaechi) security details beat to a coma. “The lawmaker has been in a coma since that incident on Tuesday and will be flown abroad for treatment. The governor is not talking about that one, his major preoccupation is the redeployment of the police commissioner.” But the Rivers State Government and the ACN, said Amaechi’s quick intervention prevented the free-for-all in the House of Assembly from escalating. The Chief of Staff, Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt, Mr. Tony Okocha, argued that Gulak should have called for an inquiry into how thugs gained entrance into the House. “It is most unreasonable to contemplate. Rather conversely, Amaechi ought to be commended for his brave intervention and rescue mission even at the risk of his life. Gulak should be suggesting an inquiry into how armed thugs got into the Assembly and at whose behest,” he said in an SMS message to The PUNCH. “He (Gulak) should be able to absolve the Presidency from complicity knowing the relationship between Bipi and the Presidency. Nigerians are better aware than he thinks,” Okocha added. The Police headquarters has however summoned the orderly to Amaechi, who was captured in a video engaging in a brawl with a lawmaker during the fracas in the House. “It is true that the police orderly who played a prominent role in the fracas has been summoned by the IG. He was captured in the video engaging in a fight with a lawmaker contrary to Force discipline and code of conduct for officers,” a source close to Louis Edet headquarters of the force said on Sunday. Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, had set up a panel headed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Operations, Philemon Leha, to probe the impasse. When contacted on Sunday, the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said investigation into the crisis was ongoing and that the force would not hesitate to invite anyone involved in the incident. “You are aware that the investigation panel set up by the IG has begun its work; so anyone found to have participated in the fracas can be invited . Everyone that played a role in the incident will be summoned,” he said. The ACN, in a statement on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said a statement credited to PSC Chairman, Mike Okiro, suggested that the commission was only interested in the role of the police in the fracas. It stated that the commission was not interested in how the police hierarchy in the state wantonly allowed the flare-up because it was acting to protect certain interests at the expense of the public. The statement reads in part, “Governor Amaechi has documented, in a much-publicised letter to Mr. Okiro, how the Police Commissioner in Rivers, Mr. Mbu has thrown professionalism to the winds in pursuing his narrow agenda at the expense of the security of the state. “It is on record that this ‘political policeman’ has worsened the security situation in the state since he assumed office in February 2013 by undermining the authority of the Governor as the Chief Security Officer of his state; undermining the security structure put in place by the State Security Council and compromising the council to such an extent that members no longer speak their minds freely during meetings. “These are the issues we expect a non-partisan PSC to address with a view to sanctioning whoever it is that paved the way for the disgraceful show that was put up under the klieg light last week. While the PSC will be right to sanction even the policemen shown to have acted badly that day, the sanctions must extend to their bosses who allowed that to happen.” ACN also insisted that Jonathan, his aides and the Peoples Democratic Party could not distance themselves themselves from the Rivers crisis. It said, “Anyone with a conscience knows that the root of the problem in Rivers lies in the President’s bedroom, and no amount of fanciful statements or name calling targeted at those who are conscientious enough to call a spade a spade will change that. “This is why we are insisting that the President must be impeached by the National Assembly for his failure to respect the rule of law and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which he has taken an oath to uphold.”
