Yero, Chime, Jang: We Won’t Join New PDP

Contrary to media reports that more Peoples’
Democratic Party, PDP, governors have agreed to
join the “New PDP” led by Abubakar Baraje, some
of the governors have distanced themselves from
the move.

The governors are the Plateau State Governor,
Jonah Jang; Kaduna State Governor, Ramalan Yero;
and the Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime.
Jang, who is the factional chairman of Nigeria
Governors’ Forum, denied being party to such plans.

He spoke through his Commissioner for Information
and Communication, Abraham Yiljap.
“I can only ask how can?” said Yiljap.
“How can he (Jang) abandon a house he built and
live in another person’s house. It is just unthinkable
and somebody’s wishful thinking,” he stressed.

Gov. Ramalan Yero of Kaduna State said reports
about him planning to join the New PDP were
untrue and the figment of the imagination of
mischief makers.
Speaking through Ahmed Maiyaki, his Director
General on Media and Publicity, Yero said, “This is
totally untrue. It is the figment of the imagination
of those behind such wild rumours.”

Enugu State Commissioner for Information, Mr.
Chuks Ugwoke, also dismissed insinuations that the
state Governor, Sullivan Chime, was planning to
ditch the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP for the New PDP.
According to him, “It is not true at all. That can
never happen. Never!
“It would never happen. Governor Chime is 100 per
cent with President Jonathan. The governor is even
the one making others to see reasons to be with
the President”, Ugwoke maintained.

N466 Billion Revenue Deficit: More Governors set to oppose Jonathan

There are
indications that the raging revenue
allocation crises between the
presidency and the State governors
may spite more governors to go
against President Goodluck
Jonathan.

All the governors are said to be very
displeased with the Federal Government
over the non-payment of the three
months’ allocations by the Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala-led Ministry of Finance.
The 36 states governors of the federation
had lamented over the non-receipt of
their arrears of about N466 billion from
the federation action for about three
months.

It is pertinent to recall that the Chairman
of Finance Commissioners Forum, Timothy
Odaah had rejected the recent allocation
from the Office of Accountant General of
the federation allocations on the basis
that the states were being owed N336
billion, with the N75 billion being the
balance of the July 2013 arrears, N121
billion from June augmentation and over
N90 billion as July augmentation.

It has also become glaring that all the 36
state governors are not happy about the
piece rate system which the federal
government has resorted to in allocating
revenues due to them.
According to a northern governor, whose
state is said to be currently “been
grounded” due to insufficient allocation
from the federations account has
confirmed that most of the governors are
now “quite upset over the financial
distress imposed on us by the Federal
Government.”
The governor who is said to be one of the
strongest supporters of Jonathan is also
seriously fighting tooth and nail to meet
up with the financial obligations of his
administration.

He however spoke anonymously recently
revealing thus: “If urgent steps were not
taken by the Presidency to put an end to
the emerging financial crisis in the states,
more governors would be forced to
distance themselves from Aso Rock Villa
and the Finance Minister.
“We are afraid that if the current
situation, which we believe is artificially
created so as to punish some states and
their governors is not stopped, many
governors would be left with no option
than to seek redress.

“It is difficult for the Finance Minister to
convince us that after generating N1.05
trillion in July this year, a figure that was
well over the projection by government
for the month, states could not be paid
their full allocations for the month.
“As we speak, we have not been paid for
August and September while our people
are anxiously looking up to us as
governors to give them dividends of
democracy through provision of life-
changing projects.
“In almost all the states, the salaries and
emoluments of civil and public servants
have not been paid while contractors are
on edge waiting to do battle with the
governors.

“If we may ask, where has all the money
gone since Okonjo-Iweala keeps insisting
that the economy is robust and kicking?”,
he queried.
Although the G-7 comprising of the “rebel
governors of the Abubakar Baraje-led
New PDP” have already publicized their
displeasure that their governments are
experiencing financial stress while the
supporters of Jonathan due to loyalty, are
finding it hard to lay theirs bare in public
view.
Another governor from the South has also
lamented over the situation stating that
the financial position of his state is so bad
that he now avoids his office due to daily
throng of contractors who besiege his
office to ask for funds.
“I have no genuine excuse to give since
they won’t believe that for the past three
months we have not been given our full
remittances by the centre.

“This is what we have been exposed to by
the Federal Government even with
increased revenue confirmed by the
Central Bank of Nigeria accruing to the
purse of the government.
“Nigerians should be more vigilant by
asking the Finance Minister where our
money is being kept. Let them tell
Nigerians what happened to the balance
of the N1.05 trillion that accrued to
Nigeria after N792billion was shared to
states for July.
“We have made the point that it is either
they are hiding our money for 2015
elections or they are deliberately
manipulating the economy to give
Nigerians the impression that all is well
when the nation is broke.”
The Accountant-General of the Federation
(AGF), Jonah Otunla, called the Chairman
of Commissioners Forum to collect a
paltry sum of N75 billion released by the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
(NNPC) out of the outstanding N466
billion of the state government
allocations.

The Federal Government, through the
AGF, was reported to have raised
N548.393 billion as the Statutory
Revenue for the three tiers of
government for August after it met tough
resistance from the state governments.
Most obviously, the President now risks
more opposition from some other
governors who are said to be on the
verge of an outburst after an internal
implosion when they can no longer
withstand the situation.

Breaking: Nigeria Polytechnic lecturers, ASUP, vow to resume nationwide strike on Friday

The Academic Staff Union of
Polytechnics, ASUP, announced on
Saturday that it has resolved to
resume its suspended nationwide
strike from next week, following
failure of the federal government to
fulfil its agreement with the union.
The union had been on several weeks
of strike, but suspended it on July 17
following the intervention of federal
lawmakers in its negotiation with the
federal government.
The National Publicity Secretary of the
union, Chirman Clement, in a
statement on Saturday said the union
took the decision at her 75th National
Executive Council (NEC) meeting held
at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger
State and resolved to resume the
suspended strike on October 4.
“In view of the continued insincerity of
Government to honour the agreement
reached with ASUP, NEC resolves that
the union will resume the suspended
strike with effect from 4th October,
2013.
The lecturers also lamented the
decaying standard of polytechnic
education and solicited the assistance
of the National Assembly, parents, and
other notable groups to assist in
revamping polytechnic education in
Nigeria.
They passed a vote of no confidence on
the National Board for Technical
Education, NBTE, and called for the
immediate establishment of a National
Polytechnics Commission (NPC) to
proactively cater for the needs of the
sector.
Below is the full communiqué released
by the polytechnic lecturers.

COMMUNIQUE OF THE 75TH
NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL
(NEC) OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF
UNION OF POLYTECHNICS (ASUP)
HELD AT FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC,
BIDA NIGER STATE, FROM 24 – 28TH
SEPTEMBER, 2013 PREAMBLE:

The National Executive Council (NEC)
of the Academic Staff Union of
Polytechnics (ASUP) met for her 75th
NEC Meeting at the Federal
Polytechnic Bida, Niger State where
the following national issues were
observed, discussed, and resolutions
on them were reached:

OBSRVATIONS:

1. The frustrating inertia of the
Federal Government to convincingly
fulfill any of the promises and
agreements reached with the union
before the suspension of the strike on
17th July, 2013 on CONTISS 15
Migration for Lower cadres, Needs
Assessment of Polytechnics, release of
Whitepaper of visitation to Federal
polytechnics, discrimination between
polytechnics and university graduates
in job placement and career
progression and the constitution of
Governing Councils to Federal
polytechnics earlier omitted.
2. The anti-labour stance of the
National Assembly as exemplified by
the recently proposed removal of
minimum wage from the exclusive
legislative list of the constitution to the
concurrent list; as well as the proposed
legislation against declaration of
Industrial Strike by unions in the
tertiary sector;
3. The growing tension in the nation’s
polity as a result of the volatile
comments and activities of politicians
and interest groups;
4. Government’s abuse of the laws
establishing TETfund;
5. The culpable lack of commitment of
the National Board for Technical
Education (NBTE) to meeting the needs
and demands of polytechnic education
in Nigeria.
6. Appointment of rectors/provosts
from within polytechnic/monotechnics
sector

RESOLUTIONS:

In the light of the
above, NEC resolves:
1. That Government should without
delay address all the outstanding
standing issues including the NEEDS
Assessments of the polytechnics and
the corresponding funding,
constitution of the Governing Councils
of the remaining Federal polytechnics,
CONITSS 15 Migration of the Lower
Cadres, the removal of disparity
between HND and Degree certificates,
establishment of the National
Polytechnics Commission (NPC),
release of the Whitepaper of the
visitation panels to polytechnics;
2. That the National Assembly should
rescind from its current anti-labour
posture in the interest of industrial
peace and our desperate move to
rescue the endangered soul of the
tertiary institutions in the country;
3. That the National Assembly should
expedite action on the review of the
Polytechnic Act;
4. That a vote of no confidence be
passed the NBTE and further calls for
the immediate establishment of a
National Polytechnics Commission
(NPC) to proactively cater for the
needs of the sector;
5. That the Nigerian political class and
other interest groups should exercise
restraint on their utterances and
activities in the interest of peace, unity
and security of the nation;
6. That the Federal Government
should desist from abuse of TETfund
laws;
7. That stakeholders in the education
sector such as parents, students,
religious leaders, the press, members
of States and National assemblies to
rise to their responsibilities of
rescuing the (polytechnic) education
sector from imminent collapse;
8. That the position of ASUP on the
need to appoint the rectors from
within the polytechnic system remains
irreversible;
9. That in view of the continued
insincerity of Government to honour
the agreement reached with ASUP,
NEC resolves that the union will
resume the suspended strike with
effect from 4th October, 2013. NEC
sincerely appreciates the good people
of Nigeria and all other stakeholders in
the education sector for their
sustained support in its struggles to
save the polytechnic education from
total collapse in Nigeria.

Ice Prince’s Producer Chopstix Reveals Details About Fire of Zamani

Ice Prince’s producer Chopstix who came
up with the hits ‘Aboki’, ‘V.I.P’ and
‘More’ has exclusively revealed to
HipHopWorld Online details surrounding
Fire of Zamani- Ice Prince’s sophomore
effort. In an interview with the producer
he said the album will contain 15-17
tracks and will be a fusion of Hip Hop,
Afro Pop, Highlife and other genres.
Chopstix who is also a member of the
group Grip Boyz said the album will
feature guest appearances from Wizkid,
Sound Sultanand others. In earlier
interviews Ice Prince has mentioned that
French Montana, Wale and Chipmunk will
be the foreign guests on his LP. Chopstix
won’t be the only man behind the boards
as Ice Prince enlisted the services of Don
Jazzy, Sarz and Sammy Gyang to produce
tracks on the album.

It would be recalled that on the 25th of
January, 2013, Iceprince, the 2013 BET
awards – Best International Act (Africa)
winner, released one of the most
anticipated songs of the Year- the
monstrous remix to his 2012 hit, Aboki.
Iceprincewho is now regarded as
Chocolate City’s main breadwinner
followed up this single with new singles in
May; Gimme Dat andVIP, continuing work
with Chopstix as producer. The track VIP
was criticized for bearing so much
resemblance to his previous singles, Aboki
and Aboki Remix. He later released
another single – I Swear featuring French
Montana. These songs are expected to
feature on his upcoming studio album
which is a follow up to his successsful
2011 – EverybodyLoves Iceprince (ELI)
debut album.

Rivers crisis: Sack CP Mbu now or face strike – Labour threatens Police IG

The crisis in Rivers State, caused by the
battle for supremacy between the state
governor, Rotimi Amaechi and the state
Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu,
took a dramatic turn yesterday as the
labour organizations in the state have laid
down a deadline for the removal or
redeployment of the Commissioner of
Police.
The Rivers State chapters of the Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade
Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have
issued an ultimatum to the Inspector-
General of Police (IGP), Mohammed
Abubakar, and the Police Service
Commission (PSC) to redeploy Mbu or
face an indefinite strike.
The organizations, while announcing the
21-day ultimatum, also reportedly
demanded that the IGP and the police
commissioner tender their unreserved
apologies for using teargas to chase away
13,000 newly-employed teachers who
were at the Liberation Stadium on
Wednesday to collect their posting
letters.
The organised labour also described the
actions and inactions of Mbu as invitation
to anarchy in Rivers State, insisting that
the police commissioner must be
redeployed forthwith to avert imminent
industrial disharmony in Rivers State.
The Rivers Chairman of the NLC, Chief
Chris Oruge, and his counterpart of the
TUC, Chika Onuegbu, at a joint news
conference yesterday at the NLC
Secretariat, D-Line, Port Harcourt,
declared that the issues raised by the
organised labour must be addressed
expeditiously, declaring that they were
not afraid of blackmail.
Amaechi and Mbu had been at
loggerheads since the police
commissioner’s redeployment from the
Oyo State Command in February, with
the NGF chairman declaring that the only
condition for peace in the state would be
the redeployment of Mbu who was
accused of taking sides and described as a
politician.
The Senate and the House of
Representatives, in separate resolutions,
before they proceeded on recess, also
called for the immediate redeployment of
the Rivers police commissioner, but the
IGP later stated that Mbu was a
professional police officer and would
remain in Rivers State.
On the allegation of being bribed by
Amaechi to discredit Mbu and embark on
strike, the NLC chairman stated that
people had the right to say whatever they
liked, but they must crosscheck the facts.

“I was only mocking Beverly,” says Afrocandy

Nigerian adult movie actress, Afrocandy,
has denied inviting Nigeria’s ex-Big
Brother Africa housemate, Beverly Osu to
star in her movie.
According to Afrocandy, she was not
serious about the offer and was merely
mocking Beverly.                      According
to her, “Fact is, I wasn’t even serious
about the so-called offer, I was just
mocking her, and if you read my post, it
was rather sarcastic. I didn’t expect it to
go viral and how could anybody even take
that serious?”
Afrocandy  had earlier said that she could
see that the sexy Nigerian model has got
what it takes to partake in her

30-Year-Old Man Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Indomie noodles

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence
Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa on Tuesday said
it arrested a 30-year-old man (name
withheld) for alleged theft of Indomie
noodles.
The corps Commandant, Mr Muhammad
Gidado, told the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) in Dutse that the suspect was
arrested in Shuwarin, Kiyawa Local
Government Area, for allegedly stealing 3
cartons of the noodles and 2 crates of
eggs.
He said the corps had been trailing the
suspect as one of the alleged criminals
terrorising shop owners in Dutse and its
environs for a long period.
“The suspect has been terrorising shop
owners in Dutse and its environs for a
long period of time.
“But we finally arrested him in Shuwarin
after he stole 3 cartons of Indomie and 2
crates of egg,” Gidado said.
He said the suspect was arrested around
5.29 p.m. on Monday by intelligence
officers stationed in the area.
The commandant said the suspect
claimed that he committed the offence
under the influence of alcohol.
He, however, said the suspect would soon
be charged to court.

Chevron de-worms 80,000 school children

No fewer than 80, 000 school children
from three local government areas of
Ondo state are to benefit from the mass
de-worming programme organised by oil
giant, Chevron.

The programme organised in conjunction
with the Women’s Right Advancement
and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) drew
beneficiaries from Akure South, Akure
North and Ilaje local government areas of
the state.

The programme was also designed for
children who are below the age of 12.
In his address, the General Manager,
Policy, Government and Public Affairs of
Chevron, Deji Haastrup, disclosed that the
target of the programme was to dei-
worm over 80, 000 children.
He said the organisation had early in the
year deployed its de-worming
programme in the state, targeted at over
10, 000 children in 10 primary schools in
Akure and communities in the Ilaje
Regional Development Committee (IRDC)
under its Global Memorandum of
Understanding (GMoU).

He said the organisation embarked on the
exercise because it had been established
that worm infestation was a leading cause
of ill health and mortality in school age
children, mostly in developing countries.
He added that available statistics from
the World Health Organisation (WHO)
indicates that hook worm was a leading
cause of anaemia and protein
malnutrition, afflicting an estimated 740
million people in the developing nations
of the tropics.

Haastrup said, “Chevron is
committed to supporting
improvement in health delivery in Nigeria
through investments in preventive health
programmes, health and social
infrastructure, sponsorship on manpower
development in the health sector and
provision of other health facilities.

“Chevron is delighted to engage in this
de-worming campaign programmes
because it is in the spirit of our
commitment to being a socially
responsible company, with a reputation
for protecting people and environment”.

Also speaking, the wife of the the state
governor, Mrs. Olukemi Mimiko,
commended the contributions of Chevron
to the health development of the state.
She stated that there was the need for
synergy between government and the
private sector towards a qualitative health
care delivery for the children.

Mimiko said, “Our children are our future,
we should take care of them, if we do this
our future will be secured, there is the
need for parents and teachers to ensure
good hygiene of these children in order
for them to live a disease free life”.

The Ondo state First Lady said the state
government was committed to child
health and infant mortality, saying that
such accounted for the huge investment
in the sector by the government.

Nigerian Music Is Wack- Jesse Jagz

That was what he told hiphop world
magazine
”This is not a Kendrick thing. You don’t
need Jesus to tell you that Nigerian music
is unintelligent. Even Goats can dance to
our music. Can Jesse Jagz make Nigeria a
better place for Wizkid? Can Wizkid do
same too? Let adults do better and let
kids party. We need to leave something
better for the coming generation”

Police Officers Stationed at UNILAG Gate to Prevent Students Protest over ASUU Strike

The students of the UNILAG might not be
able to protest over the current ASUU
strike that has been on for a while now.
The Federal Govt. has taken drastic steps
to prevent anything like a protest
happening within and outside the
premises of the University of Lagos.
If we can recall, the students of UNILAG
once took to the streets and blocked the
third mainland bridge at one point when
they protested sometime in May 2012
over the change of the name of the
Institution to Moshood Abiola University
which didn’t seem to go down well with
the students of the institution. Based on
this, the Federal Govt. has placed
preventive measures as the students
have been set to be preparing to protest
over the prolonged strike.

I Don’t Have Any Ex That Is A Psychopath! Skuki Tweets After Alledged ‘Nude’ Picture Surfaced Online

a girl who was allegedly jilted by one
of the Skuki brothers sent out the
private chats they had and also sent a
picture of his joystick online and to
some bloggers , And this morning, one of
them tweeted this;

“I didn’t rape her, she stripped herself naked” – Okada rider caught having sex with housewife

A married father of two, who is also a
commercial motorcyclist aka “okada
rider”, was allegedly caught red handed
engaging in intercourse with a married
woman in a deserted wooded area of
Orlu, Imo State.

However, both parties to the act have
told different stories about what
transpired between them. The woman, a
45-year-old housewife, insists that she
was being raped by the 30-year-old man
while the motorcyclist insists that he and
the woman are lovers.

According to reports , the woman said she
engaged the motorcyclist at Orlu to take
her to her matrimonial home at Obibi-
Ochasi. She said when they got to a
solitary area along the route, the man
stopped ostensibly to ease himself.
She further told the police that while she
was waiting for him to finish easing
himself, the man emerged and started
asking that they sleep together, adding
that when she refused the amorous
advance, the man grabbed her and
forcefully lifted her into the bush.

The woman equally claimed that the
rapist tore her inner wears to shreds,
over-powered and raped her.
In his defence, the man claimed that the
woman had been his concubine for years,
adding that he had previously had fun
with her at different times and places,
including the spot where they were
caught in the act.

He also claimed that he called the woman
on her mobile line and asked her to meet
him at the agreed spot in Orlu.
The man also claimed that when they got
to the bush, the woman stripped herself
naked, spread her wrapper on the ground
and laid down before he started the act.
The randy motorcyclist, however, agreed
that along the line there was a minor
misunderstanding on the amount he
should pay after they had satisfied
themselves.

While the man claimed that the woman
was asking for N500 for the service, he
offered N200, which he said was the only
money on him at the time.

Now, who are we to believe, the randy
man or the married woman?

Catholic priest remanded in prison over assault, attempted murder charges in Enugu

A Catholic priest  in Enugu State who is
alleged to have led an assault on
policemen was yesterday remanded in
prison.

'
According to reports, the priest, along
with three of his parishioners, is being
charged with assault upon a number of
policemen attached to the state
headquarters and unlawful attempt to kill
one Inspector Cosmos Nzeribe.
The Enugu Magistrate Court, which
remanded the priest was, however,
reportedly besieged by hundreds of his
supporters, who wore long faces as the
priest was being taken to the prison.

Presiding Magistrate, E.M. Egumgbe,
remanded the suspects in prison custody,
saying that they can apply for bail in a
high court.
Counsel to the priest, Ray Nnaji, who
spoke with newsmen after the court
session, said that his client was sent to
prison on trumped up charges.
Nnaji said the policemen beat up the
priest after stripping him naked and
detained him.

He said: “I have been following this
matter for some time.
“We know quite well that beating up the
police is condemnable, though the priest
has said he has no business with beating
the police and did not tell anyone to beat
the police.”

SCAM: Man dupes buyer in fake car deal while posing as customs officer

A man posing as a customs officer in a bid
to sell a car under false pretenses has
been apprehended by men of the Ogun
State Police Command.

The young man, identified simply as Peter
perpetuated fraud against an
unsuspecting customer as he informed
the buyer that he was disposing of the car
through a public auction by the Customs
Service.

Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa
Adejobi, in a statement in Abeokuta,
reportedly said that Peter resides at
Osomurika Road, Igarra in Edo State, but
committed the crime in Agbara, Ogun
State.
According to Adejobi, the suspect was,
however, arrested at Auchi Edo State on
September 16, following a manhunt for
his arrest by the police detectives from
the Agbara Division of the Command.

He said: “Mr. Amune had already
collected N200,000 from his victim, Mr.
Johnson Umeugoji, who claimed to have
seen the announcement of the auction
placed on internet by the suspect.
“The victim paid the money into the bank
account of the suspect in Auchi.
“The suspect had told his victim to meet
him and his colleagues at Agbara for the
public auction, purportedly carried out by
Customs.

“The victim, who eventually realised that
he had been duped, reported the matter
at the Agbara division and the DPO, Ayo
Sonubi, swung into action, leading to the
suspect’s arrest.
“The suspect has confessed that he
belongs to a syndicate that specializes in
duping people using such methods.
“The Command is intensifying efforts to
arrest the other members of the
syndicate. He will be charged to the
magistrate’s court, Agbara, as soon as
investigation is concluded.”

Okey Ikechukwu: Onyeka Onwenu, remember Remi Oyo, Ifueko

Onyeka Onwenu is to offer leadership
to an organisation that needs to be
taken to new levels of relevance,
credibility and visibility.

Onyeka Onwenu’s story would most
probably be very different today if she
was given her due after her youth service
with the Nigerian Television Authority,
decades ago.
Some still recall how she changed the
face of television news reporting in
Nigeria, at least from the news
presentation we were all familiar with at
the time. Crisp, professional and
confident about her capacity without
flaunting it, the NYSC news
correspondent who returned to Nigeria
with a Masters’ Decree had everything
going for her as a well-trained media
professional.

She trusted her capacity, rather than
other ‘matters arising’, to earn a place in
order to serve her fatherland. It didn’t
quite work out the way many cheerful
observers had expected.

There was profound consternation when
she was not retained by the NTA after
her National Service.
Then her music, which was peculiarly her
own, came without warning.
If not for her current appointment,
Onyeka would most probably have spent
the rest of her life known to the much
younger generation of Nigerians as
another iconic singer and part-time
actress with good elocution and above
average self-possession.
It is also very likely that she would not be
where she is at the moment, but for the
First Lady’s drive on women issues and
the president’s leaning towards
capacitating women in the public domain
via appointments. So, welcome to the
new story of Onyeka Onwenu that is
about to begin, following her appointment
as the Executive Director/CEO of the
National Council for Women
Development (NCWD).

The new position is both an exciting and a
delicate one, demanding great political
maturity, profound women (not just
people) skills and a team disposition. She
must strive to ensure that no personal
qualities stand in her way, as she has to
deal with various strata of society.
Onyeka Onwenu is to offer leadership to
an organisation that needs to be taken to
new levels of relevance, credibility and
visibility.
But it is a level that must take it beyond
the stereotypes we are familiar with, to
where the rest of the right-headed world
is. That is why she must do everything
which her years of experience and
exposure have taught her to ensure she
gives competent leadership in her new
position.
Remi Oyo, former Managing Director of
the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and
Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, former head of
the Federal Inland Revenue Service
(FIRS), left exceptionally commendable
precedents in this regard.
Their tenure and trajectory leaves no one
in doubt today that these two women,
among others, understood that all it takes
to move an organisation to new heights
of excellence and service efficiency is a
leadership that has its wits about it in
every respect.
They understood that to offer leadership
is not the same thing as merely to be the
CEO, give orders and generally “be in
charge”. A person in charge in a 21st
century world must be in charge of the
right value paradigms for transformation,
sustainability, effective and relevant
partnerships, as well as processes and
procedures that ensure and preserve best
practices.

Remi Oyo and Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru
offered competent leadership as seen in
their personal psychological maturity and
thorough understanding of the real
challenges of the operating environment.
They took everything beyond the
institutional or structural challenges facing
their respective organisations at the time
they took office and broke new grounds.
These two women, during their tenure in
the aforementioned organisations,
operated with well thought out templates
for resurrecting the souls of NAN and
FIRS.
They also ensured sustainable
management of the human and material
resources entrusted to them.
Yes, they went beyond merely holding
fort to completely re-engineer these
public institutions; unconsciously making
themselves prime candidates for possible
prosecution for the unheard-of crime of
being highly efficient, effective, respected,
unobtrusive and truly transformational
leaders.
They had so much to lament about, but
they did not. They had more than enough
reasons to put on airs following their track
record early on the beat, but they did
not.

They had such brilliant ideas about what
to do but they did not advertise their
brilliance or distract anyone by verbal
extravagance.
They could have incorporated a fiery
messianic temper into every utterance
and written word, but they did not.
They had so much to lament about in
terms of the challenges and even official
obstacles they met, but they avoided any
proclivity for ‘lamentational’ public
commentary – even as they dealt with all
manner of benumbing issues.
Omoigui-Okauru took on all comers in a
sector that was densely populated by
individuals and organisations whose
subversive creativity keeping and
reprehensible book keeping would leave
Sherlock Holmes speechless.
But no one heard her voice, except when
she had perfected a policy or intervention
template that made yet another antic of
tax dodgers unattractive. She felt no need
to demonise anyone, but focused on the
simple fact that FIRS needed to chart a
course for the citizens and the national
treasury.
Having designed the new road, she
installed road signs, defined penalties for
non-compliance and deployed enforcers
to keep everyone on the slippery path of
rectitude.
And, lest we forget, all this came after
and along with painstaking public
education initiatives that are fool-proof
and ever on-going!
Remi, on her part will forever introduce
herself as “ A Reporter”. Take her on and
she will cheerily reply, ‘Okey my brother,
this MD business means that I have to
ensure that news is available by making
the report available.
Therefore, I am a reporter’. If you accuse
her of misinforming herself about her
status she will quickly retort that the only
time she will worry is if the public and the
profession she is serving complains of
being misinformed. Remi Oyo? The
woman should be restrained o! See what
she made of NAN, as she built on all the
gains from those before her! Capacity,
infrastructure, revenue generation,
institutional credibility, international
standing and much more tumbled out
huge positives under her watch.
But you will not easily notice Remi in a
‘crowd’ of three people. Ditto for Ifueko.

The two ladies seem to be in hiding at the
moment, but no one should allow them
get away with such mischief! Please fish
them out for more work.
An essential element in the obviously
successful tenure of the two ladies is
their clear knowledge of the political
economy of the sectors they were getting
into.
Every leader must have this, in addition
to knowing the interests that must be
taken into account so as to move
forward. Some of these interests are to
be accommodated, while others are to be
creatively led off to the undertaker. It is
interests that often come under the
omnibus, if not nebulous, title of
‘stakeholders’. A leader who defines his
stakeholders wrongly is already a failure.
The spectacular failure of several reform
efforts of the federal government over
the years is traceable to this one failing.
Over and over again, otherwise gifted
public office holders across all industry
divides achieve much less than they are
capable of because they take off with the
mistaken assumption that ‘the good guys’,
who want to create El-Dorado on planet
earth (and even in hell, for all you know)
are the only  real stakeholders to be
taken seriously.

A good deal of the time, ‘the bad guys’
are actually the ones to be taken much
more seriously and sometimes even into
confidence on how their interests could
be modified to accommodate a wider
bracket of beneficiaries. Sometimes all
that the bad guys need is education on
the unsustainability of their platforms and
how unfolding events would make them
unviable in a year or two.
Going back to Remi, no one knew of her
battles with editors and media owners
who would take NAN content without the
simple courtesy of acknowledgment. All
her years of media work and
management were collapsed into a
personal resolve to help develop the
simple business of news procurement,
selling and buying into the great asset it
is in many nations of the world.
As we welcome Onyeka Onwenu to what
will undoubtedly be an eventful national
assignment, let us also remind her that
she will be dealing with her fellow
women.
It is rumoured that they are difficult to
manage, when they are all by themselves.
I refrain from any personal comment on
the latter claim as I am neither a women
nor a rumour monger. Suffice it to point
out that the CEO of NCWD will not be
managing a corporate platform with
sometimes unimpeachable Rules of
Engagement.
What will most probably put Onyeka in
good stead is the fact that her upbringing
gave her the opportunity to understand
some fundamental cultural issues that
could impact positively on women
development and empowerment if they
are properly understood and harnessed.
But she must seek a new understanding
and definition of womanhood itself.
Motherhood does not necessarily
translate into womanhood as such. Yes it
is possible to be a mother in the
biological sense and yet not be a genuine
woman in the spiritual sense.

Congratulation, Onyeka Onwenu and may
your path lead in the right direction!
Values! The new CEO of NCWD must
begin her interventions by clarifying and
redefining the core values that have
guided our understanding and use of our
women for far too long.
Why is it that they are often presented as
just side entertainment and ‘dancing
things’ at political rallies? When will
women cease to present themselves as
part of the menu at public events and
conferences? Is there a role for young
ladies in the council and should Onwenu
think of occasional consultaticve forum
with female Head Girls, etc. and how is
she going to navigate the troubled waters
of onter-agency rivalry and sundry land
mines all over the place.
She can do it, of course and a clear
template of implementable actions with
measurable results which enjoys wide
strakeholder ownership will see her
through.

“Okiro is a chronic political jobber with a nasty record” – Ribadu tackles ex-IG of Police

The tension between former police officer
and erstwhile chairman of the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),
Nuhu Ribadu and a former Inspector
General of Police, Mike Okiro has
continued to provide fodder for news
stories.

The two have constantly been at
loggerheads with Mr. Ribadu stating that
his persecution began after the
“despicable Okiro took over as the
Inspector General of Police”
Ribadu also stated that Okiro ordered the
removal of his car and bodyguard, leaving
him exposed and that during the period
there were two attempts on his life. Mr.
Okiro, in response to this, released a
statement saying that “Ribadu is an
inveterate liar.”
This has caused Mr. Ribadu’s camp to
issue a press statement of their own in
response to the allegations levelled
against the former EFCC chairman.

Read full statement below:
Our attention has been drawn to the
shameless lies a former Inspector
General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro
recklessly spewed to the media
yesterday. The cause of Mr. Okiro’s
anger, the statement, in a London
court, by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu that
James Ibori was instrumental to his
emergence as the Inspector General of
Police (IGP) needs no further
equivocation as it was an open secret
to everybody in the government circle
then.

If Okiro is now denying this in public,
there is no way he can deny this open
secret to a number of people including
an influential governor from the
North-Central then, and a couple of
other people who helped facilitate his
selection by Ibori. It was this same
shameless method of desperate
lobbying that Okiro, a chronic political
jobber and sycophant of the first order
would use in getting subsequent
appointments as Chief Security Officer
to the PDP national chairman and
later, regrettably, as the chairman of
the Police Service Commission.

The assertion by Okiro that Ribadu
wanted to be the IGP further
underlines the former IGP as a
perennial peddler of falsehood. The
truth is Nuhu Ribadu’s focus then was
consolidating on his modest efforts at
the EFCC, especially at a time when he
was working on high-profile cases,
including that of Okiro’s godfather,
James Ibori. We therefore challenge
Okiro to name those people he called
Ribadu’s friends that narrated the
fictitious story of Ribadu’s interest in
becoming the IGP to him.

The highest distortion in Okiro’s
statement, however, is his attempt to
rewrite the well-known and widely
documented assassination attempts on
the former EFCC chairman, and Okiro’s
hands in it all. It is ridiculous that
Okiro is now desperately trying to
paint himself in another colour after
all the schemings he orchestrated.
It beats our imagination that Okiro
would want a Nuhu Ribadu he was
fighting to destroy to report those
incidences to him. It would have been
a case of having a culprit to be a judge
in his own case. At the time, the trio of
Micheal Aondoakaa, the former
Attorney General of the Federation,
Okiro and Mrs Farida Waziri, the
former EFCc chairman, had created a
hell out of the world for Ribadu.

The
only sensible thing to do was to avoid
these characters and seek solace
somewhere else.
This notwithstanding, it is a blatant lie
that Okiro telephoned Ribadu “several
times” but that he did not answer his
calls. What Ribadu and other Nigerians
easily recall was an elated Okiro
rushing to address the press to deny
something he knew nothing about. The
bullet-riddled car Ribadu drove
during that unfortunate life
threatening incident is still there, if
Okiro or any other person would want
a further proof.

On the issue of withdrawal of Ribadu’s
personal security, if Okiro is suffering
from selective amnesia, let him be
reminded that that was exactly what
he did. he also redeployed Ibrahim
Lamorde out of EFCC, to Bauchi State
Police Command as Area Commander
in Ningi. He did the same thing to
other top EFCC operatives that Nigeria
spent a fortune to train as
investigators. One of them suspected
to be close to Ribadu was even locked
up for months in police custody. This
also belie his statement that as IGP he
could not have altered the postings of
police within the EFCC.

As for Okiro’s corruption credentials,
we would like to alert the retired IGP
that he is dancing naked in the gallery
as his nasty record is something
known to a lot of people. A man who
clearly reeks of corruption, is Okiro
denying that he is corrupt when we all
know he cannot account for the source
of the wealth he used in building a
shopping mall in Jabi, a hotel with
casino in Lugbe and a private school,
all in Abuja?

This is not to mention his property in
Lagos and Port Harcourt, while he was
still serving in the police. If a public
servant, one tasked with the
responsibility of protecting the lives of
Nigerians and instilling discipline in
the police, managed to amass such
wealth, what gut does he have to talk
of corruption? It is a national tragedy
that a man of such flawed character
has now been appointed to head an
important institution like the Police
Service Commission. May God rescue

“There is nothing religious about Boko Haram” – Yobe Governor, Geidam

Following the Boko Haram attack at Yadin
Buni town of Gujba Local Government
Area of Yobe State, last week where lives
and property worth millions of naira were
lost, Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam on
Tuesday said the Boko Haram insurgents
would not succeed in their ceaseless
campaign of violence against Nigeria and
Nigerians.

The Governor regretted that the sect had
inflicted much pains on the people
especially in the two North Eastern states
of Borno and Yobe.

Gaidam who was at Buni-Yadi,
headquarters of Gujba Local Government
on inspection of public facilities destroyed
by the insurgents stated that both
Christians and Muslims have continued to
pray for God to intervene in the almost
four years old insurgency.

He maintained that the prayers of
Nigerians would receive answer by God,
noting that the sect would not succeed in
its blood letting.

He expressed hope that the
incessant attacks would soon be
over and that the affected areas would
soon heave a sigh of relief.

The Governor, however, observed that
“there is “nothing religious about the
Boko Haram sect and its activities”.

He said the ideology of the sect was
“completely unacceptable”, as no religion
believes in killing and compelling of
others to accept one’s way of worship.
While sympathizing with the affected
persons, the Governor commended the
security agencies in the state and assured
of government readiness to continue to
support them to fight insurgency and
other crimes in the area.

He described the latest attack as “callous
and barbaric”.
It could be re-called that suspected Boko
Haram insurgents attacked the
commercial town of Buni-Yadi in Yobe last
Wednesday, killing several persons.
The local government education office,
fire service unit, resident of the Divisional
Police Officer, a police station and a
residential quarter were among the
structures burnt by the insurgents.

ASUU STRIKE: Group Drags Union To Court

THE strike action embarked upon by university
lecturers has assumed another dimension as
the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
has been dragged before the National
Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) over the
lingering strike action.

The suit, with the number NICW/Abj/242/2013
which also has ministers of labour and productivity,
education, finance and justice, as well as secretary
to the government of the federation as defendants,
was instituted by the registered trustees of Golden
Women of Integrity and Vision Association and Mrs.
Florence Uche Ojieh.
In the suit, the claimants are asking the court to
determine whether the strike action embarked
upon by ASUU is not illegal and contrary to law and
whether members of the union are not bound by
the policy of ‘no work no pay’ and therefore not
entitled to their salary during the period of the
strike.

They also asked the court to determine whether
members of ASUU are entitled to continue to retain
their employment, having abandoned or deemed to
have abandoned their work in the universities;
whether or not the union complied with the
mandatory provisions of Section 4 and 5 of the
Trade Dispute Act CAP T8 LFN 2004 before
embarking on the strike; whether the union has
complied with the provision of Section 8 of the
Trade Disputes Act CAP T8 LFN 2004; whether or
not the minister of education is not entitled to
determine the employment of the union, same
having abandoned or deemed to have abandoned
their work in their universities and whether or not
the doctrine of collective bargain or the purported
2009 agreement can be the basis for the strike
action by ASUU same not having been incorporated
in their contract of employment between it and the
federal government.

The reliefs sought by the claimants include a
declaration that the strike action embarked upon by
ASUU since July 2, 2013 is illegal, unconstitutional,
null and void.
Other reliefs are an order of mandatory injunction
directing the union to go back to work immediately
and unconditionally; an order directing the union to
return or refund all monies paid to it by the federal
government in error or otherwise; an order
directing ASUU to return to the negotiation table
and a declaration that the strike action is illegal,
unconstitutional, null and void.?

“I was just counseling him”: Catholic priest caught with pantless 15-year-old boy (PICTURED)

A Catholic priest in Pennsylvania was
charged with molesting a 15-year-old boy
after cops say he was caught in the act.
Father W. Jeffrey Paulish was allegedly
found with the boy — who was wearing
no pants — in a car on the Penn State
University campus Thursday, CNN reports.

Police say they discovered the 56-year-
old Scranton priest and the boy while
responding to the call of a suspicious
vehicle.

Paulish initially told cops that he was
working on his homily on campus when he
met the boy, who he said was in
emotional distress and needed
counseling. Police say he later admitted
that he met the teen through the “casual
encounters” section of Craigslist.

Paulish said he asked the boy several
times if he was over the age of
18, according to the Times Leader.
“I wish to acknowledge how unsettling
this is to me personally and to countless
others,” Scranton Bishop Joseph Bambera
said in a statement published online.
“Upon being notified of this incident, the
cleric was immediately removed from his
assignment and his faculties to exercise
priestly ministry were suspended.”
Diocesan officials are asking that anyone
who may have been sexually abused by
Paulish contact local law enforcement.

Paulish was charged with a felony count of
involuntary deviate sexual intercourse as
well as unlawful contact with a minor. He
was also charged with three misdemeanor
counts: indecent contact with a minor,
indecent exposure and corruption of a
minor. He was held at Lackawanna
County Jail on $50,000 bail.

Nasarawa remains bitterly divided over impending#EmergencyRule as calls for Maku’s head get louder

The recent renewal of communal hostilities in Nasarawa has firmly divided public opinion within the state. Nowhere is this more apparent than the debate over speculation that the federal government is mulling over the prospects of declaring a state of emergency in the state. Leading the charge are the two biggest parties in the country.Senator Solomon Ewuga (All Progressives Congress, Nasarawa North), and his Peoples DemocraticParty counterpart, Senator Suleiman Adokwe, representing Nasarawa South, have emerged as the faces of this increasingly vocal and at times bitter debate.Ewuga, in a Vanguard telephone interview Sunday, said although he was deeply concerned with the continuing insecurity in the state, despite peace efforts by the federal and Nasarawa governments, religious, traditional leaders and concerned individuals, he was still optimistic that dialogue not coercive force, would bring a lasting solution. He said that the deployment of the army by the Federal Government to bring the situation under control was welcome, but remained concerned that military force could further escalate the situation.Senator Suleiman Adokwe, who represents Nasarawa South, had last Thursday, at a briefing in Abuja, asked the Federal Government to consider declaring a state of emergency in the state, saying that the crisis “could no longer be treated with kid gloves.”In Adokwe’s words, “I am going to back the members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly who have already called for the declaration ofa state of emergency in the state.”The clashes have largely been located in Adokwe’s senatorial district. Ewuga has said that he would hold private talks with Adokwe on this matter.Ewuga and Adokwe’s disagreement come as two Peoples Democratic Party chieftains in the state, Ibrahim Saleh and Kawu Dalhatu, inseparate statements in Abuja, expressed concern that two weeks after the latest violence, information and supervising defence minister, Mr Labaran Maku, a prominent indigene of the state, was yet to undertake an assessment tour of the crisis area. The ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party have been trading blames over who is responsible for the spate of crises that has plagued the state for the past two years. The APC has accused the PDP of having a hand in the crises, while the PDP, through its state chairman,Mr Yunana Iliya, laid that responsibility at the footsteps of thestate government, and, yes, the APChas called for Maku’s removal as defence boss. The party says that he was not only an Eggon man, but also would not be capable of a neutral assessment of the crisis. But Iliya, in a statement, not only exonerated Maku of complicity in the crisis but blamed the APC government in Nasarawa for the recurring violence. The Federal Government has deployed troops to the state to restore peace and order after thelatest crisis believed to be between Ombatse militia youths of Eggon extraction and Alago ethnic nationality, left many people dead, many others seriously injured and property worth several millions of naira destroyed.

Lagosians spend N36billion annually on parties - Governor Fashola

Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji
Fashola, this weekend revealed that
more than N36 billion is spent by
Lagosians annually to organise parties.
The governor said this at the 4th edition
of the Lagos Ignite Enterprise and
Employability project, a joint youth
empowerment programme between
the government and the Afterschool
Graduate Development Centre, AGDC.

Governor Fashola said:

“This was the study of night life
carried out by the government in
five local governments including
Agege, Mushin, Ifako-Ijaiye and
Ikeja and another local
government. It showed that more
than N36 billion was spent on
1555 parties held within the
period. We did a study between
October and November last year.

We studied from Thursday, Friday
and Saturday nights, three days
every week for four weeks which
was 12 nights. In 12 nights, 1555
parties were held in these local
governments. In terms of drinks,
food and all other engagements
during such parties, about N1.2
billion was spent and when we
dis-aggregated them we saw how
much went to DJ, MC, food and
drinks, the total picture in the
state now and I don’t want to
give you a wrong number but it’s
something in the region of about
N3 billion monthly on that side of
our life and people are playing
and impacting on that side of our
economy.

The governor further stated that Aso
Ebi alone gulped a minimum of
N1.2billion monthly.

group,Ondo Elders and Youth
Amalgamated Forum [OEYAF] has urged
the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) and other anti graft
agencies to investigate the allegations of
financial impropriety levelled against one
of the Directors of Local Government
Administration in the state.

A petition signed by the group’s
coordinator, Mr Samuel Fanibe and
Secretary Joel Memuletiwon urged the
Commission to beam its searchlight on
the alleged financial scam, believed to
have been perpetrated by the official in
all the local councils he had worked in the
past.

The group said “the need for your
Commission to beam its searchlight on
the Financial scandal committed by the
Director who is one of the presidential
candidates of National Union of Local
Government Employees [NULGE] in the
state became imperative in view of his
ambition ”
“It is pertinent to remind your
Commission that the official was one of
the nine Senior Staff in the local
government councils in Ondo state who
attempted to defraud the state in
collaboration with Senior Officers of the
Ministry of Local Government and
Chieftancy Affairs to the tune of N650M
over 2012 leave’s bonus.

“He has been involved in various
frauds in all the councils he had
worked. His
activities have made him to acquire so
much assets worth several millions of
Naira.
“As a senior staff, it may interest your
commission to note that he has three
sprawling hotels-one at Ikare-Akoko, one
in Owo town, and the third one in Ore
town.

“He also has four hostels at Akungba
Akoko and three at FUTA area of Akure
and he has fourteen houses completed
and rented out in various locations in
Akure, the state capital.

“Above all he, has over N150M in various
bank accounts with fictitious names. We
therefore urge your operative to come
down to the state and investigate the
official in all local councils he had worked.
We are assuring you that we will provide
you with documents and other':
materials that will further expose him.”
